Designing Computer-based Training

Summary of Direct Instruction Training

This portfolio project consisted of designing and developing an online training. This training was based upon the principles and methodology of Direct Instruction, which was developed by Siegfried Engelmann and Doug Carnine (Carnine and Engelmann, 1991). This training was developed for a team of writers in an instructional design department. These writers develop instruction for students in Primary and Junior Secondary low-cost schools. This project is an update of an existing text-based training. It aims to provide additional visual and interactive supports; both of these were not feasible in the original creation. A primary component of the design and develop component of this training was a Reusable Learning Object (RLO). RLO is a small piece of instruction. It contains all the essential elements of a longer piece of instruction, including objectives, 'absorb' phase, 'connect' component and 'practice' or assessment piece. This RLO was developed with Storyline Articulate, which is an elearning course authorware tool. Feel free to check it out below.

Reusable Learning Object Design Document

This design document encapsulates the whole project in writing. It outlines the objectives, explicates the learning process and even provides design decisions 'to-be-made'. It acts as a plan as well as a step in the approval process.

Reusable Learning Object Storybord

This is the storyboard, which is the first point where the instruction becomes 'envisioned'. A storyboard should predict what should happen in the actual prototype as much as possible.

Resuable Learnng Object

This is the Resuable Learning Objective, which was the main instruction that was developed.

Usability of RLO

The usability test ensures that the RLO functions properly and meets user experience standards. This includes how the navigation works, evaluation of image use and general styling concerns. The usability test marks the last time of any revisions or edits.

Reflection

This reflection paper discusses process of creating the RLO. It also reflects on the experience of the Design Computer-based Training course.
